To Haiti with love

The outside temperature chilled the bones on this late-January evening. But inside Laurentian’s Fraser Auditorium, the house was packed and people were warming up to a night of musical gumbo in support of Haiti.

Within 48 hours of the earthquake that devastated the island, Laurentian alumnus Guy Campeau – founder and regional director of the international registered charity Mission of Tears – had begun planning the Haiti Earthquake Relief Concert. Some of the charity’s schools and orphanages have been destroyed, and the mission station headquarters took in 200 homeless Haitians. “Some just had nowhere to go,” said Campeau, adding, “so they've come because it’s a safe place.”

Organizing a three-hour concert in just over two weeks was challenging for the concert director. But Campeau explains, “The only reason it has worked is because every single person that was approached came on board 150 per cent. It was the spirit of this community.”

Every single one of the ten performers that evening volunteered their time for the cause. Singer/songwriter Robert Paquette came all the way from Montreal to participate in the event to show solidarity with Haiti. “Almost everybody has a Haitian friend,” said Paquette. “The disaster has been so enormous, it has hit everybody.”

Other performers included singer and musician Jeff Wiseman, singer/songwriter Stéphane Paquette, and drummer Philip May and the Sudbury Saturday Night Orchestra. Orchestra musicians were Joe Reda on bass, Peter Nelson and Marc Savard on guitar, Tony Simpkin on keyboards, Peter Scherzinger on trumpet, and Jean-Yves Bégin on saxophone. Many performers and band members are Laurentian alumni, or have some Laurentian connection. Co-hosts were alumni Senator Marie-Paule Poulin andcommunity booster Gerry Lougheed Jr.

The $52,000 raised for the Haiti Earthquake Relief Concert will provide staples like water, food, and shelter to the 200 Haitians at the Mission of Tears headquarters. “Then, once life-sustaining needs are met, when life becomes semi-normal, we will rebuild our structures that have been damaged,” said Campeau.

Other Laurentian groups have joined in efforts to help Haiti, including the Laurentian University Afro-Caribbean Student Association, which raised $1,013 through their bake sale.
