Student Support

International students studying at Laurentian University receive the full support of the Centre for Academic Excellence (CAE).  Academic advisors from the CAE provide the resources and guidance needed to achieve academic success.  The Learning Assistance Centre (LAC) includes the Writing Assistance Centre, tutoring, the Tutor Registry and Skills for Success. Furthermore, experiences gained outside the classroom are recorded on a Co-Curricular Report which can eventually become part of the student’s professional portfolio. This portfolio can be used to support the search for employment or internship opportunities, as well as, admission to graduate school. These experiences can further enrich your academic development while at Laurentian.

All LU-ESL and LU-EAP students receive full support from the Centre for Academic Excellence (CAE) to ensure that students achieve academic success.

This includes:

•    Advice and guidance from Academic Advisors

•    One-on-one tutoring with LELI tutors weekly along with optional support from the Learning Assistance Program (LAC) and the Writing Centre.

•    A co-curricular report which is added to the student’s portfolio.


Housed within the Centre for Academic Excellence is the Laurentian English Language Institute (LELI). The Institute offers 3 types of programming:

a) ESL Program non-degree stream (LU-ESL)

b) Laurentian English Academic Preparation (LU-EAP) Program for undergraduate and graduate students

c) Special Programs

Course offerings are scheduled so that students who are required to complete their English Language Proficiency courses can complete their upgrading within one calendar year.

Class sizes are tailored with the student in mind. The number of students in a class ranges from seven to fifteen.

The goals of the Laurentian English Language Institute (LELI) are to prepare students to read, write, speak and listen in English within the context of learning the intellectual and practical skills required for successful completion of their degree program and for continued life-long learning. Classes are taught by qualified TESL teachers and expert faculty committed to achieving these goals.

Traditional academic preparation programs for international students focus on language acquisition.  Laurentian University strives to impart language skills within the context of learning academic and practical skills.

The program learning outcomes are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR) and the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB).  The Common European Framework of Languages (CEFR) was designed by the Council of Europe to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe and to provide a reference for language learning, teaching and assessment for all main European languages. It is accepted as the international standard for language teaching and learning.

Laurentian University has knowledgeable academic advisors to assist students in reaching their academic goals. All international students must meet with an academic advisor in the CAE before registering in any courses.  Students must also meet with their academic advisor at least once during each term to review their progress and discuss their future plans.

Tutoring is a way of improving learning by requiring students to take an active part in the learning process. Students target the areas where they feel they need extra help or where the tutor received feedback from the instructor. The Tutoring Program at Laurentian is built into the curriculum and follows the student week by week. Additional services include:

• One-on-one tutoring is offered to all LELI students at no extra charge.  Students meet with their tutor(s) twice a week for 1 hour sessions to work on reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar.

• Individualized Study Plans: Students attend an orientation session and create an individual learning plan with a tutor. The individualized learning plan will include access to self-study websites, workshops and e-modules, and the students check in with their tutor as they complete the tasks.

• Self-Directed Studies: Students create an individual learning plan with a tutor. This plan will give them access to self-study websites, short online courses, modules and resources they can use to improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
