Indigenous Environmental Perspectives & Realities

This course explores topics relating to Indigenous views of environment and resource management from pre-European contact times to the present. Emphasis is placed on the currently emerging role of Indigenous peoples in environmental governance and resource management in Canada through such mechanisms as self-government agreements, land claims settlements, application of Aboriginal and treaty rights and co-management regimes. Case examples are utilized from areas such as forestry, water quality, wildlife management, conservation and protected areas. (lec 3, tut 1) 3 cr.
