Race and Immigration in North America

This course examines changing ideas of "race" and their relationship to immigration policy in Canada from 1840 to 1990. Topics include Canadian slavery, Black migration from the United States, Klu Klux Klan activities in Canada, and the lives and labour of English, Irish, and Ukrainian immigrants. The course ends with an examination of Canadian "multiculturalism." The central goal of the course is to understand both the legal (de jure) and social (de facto) policing of geo-political boundaries. (lec 3) cr 6
